Redwall is the story of the mice of Redwall Abbey. For many years, they have lived in peace and provided healing to the creatures of the countryside. One day, a foul wind brings the rat Cluny and his band of vicious rats crashing into the lives of the woodland animals. Cluny decides to capture Redwall Abbey and make it his palace, forcing the peaceful mice to defend themselves. Matthias, a young mouse of Redwall, wants to help defend his home and friends. He nds himself following the path of an ancient defender of the Abbey, Martin the Warrior. As he learns about himself and discovers secrets about the Abbey long forgotten, he leads his friends to victory against Cluny the Scourge.

Throughout the novel there are opportunities to discuss hero principles, particularly conversations about a “call to action.” Calls to action are thoughts or ideas to do good. Heroes hear and act on calls to action. Acting on small calls to action brings more and bigger calls to action. Confidence comes from acting on calls to action. Your purpose and mission become more clear as you act on calls to action. It’s a pattern we see in Redwall and can relate to in our own lives.
